 Stroke Information

08/08/2022

We would like to share with you the details of a local charity for those affected by stroke, their families and carers.

The charity, Strokeinformation, was founded by ex-footballer, Nick Clarke, in September 2012.  Nick felt compelled to start the charity after he suffered a stroke. His personal experiences mean he can relate to, empathise with and support those affected by stroke. Part of the charity activity is a free weekly drop-in group held at Disability Stockport, 23 High Street, Stockport,  SK1 1EG.

The group is open to anyone impacted by stroke, they will find a warm welcome and the opportunity to talk to others about their own experiences, helpful information and advice. No appointment is necessary, check for details of the day and times.

In Stockport alone there are over 7300 registered stroke survivors. In the UK a stroke happens to approximately 153,000 people each year, globally that figure is 17 million each and every single year.

If you, a family member or friend would like to know more about the charity contact Nick directly by email nick@strokeinformation.co.uk or visit www.strokeinformation.co.uk

Recognising the signs of a stroke

The main stroke symptoms can be remembered with the word FAST:

Face  – the face may have dropped on one side, the person may not be able to smile, or their mouth or eye may have drooped.

Arms  – the person may not be able to lift both arms and keep them there because of weakness or numbness in one arm.

Speech – their speech may be slurred or garbled, or the person may not be able to talk at all despite appearing to be awake; they may also have problems understanding what you’re saying to them.

Time – it’s time to dial 999 immediately if you notice any of these signs or symptoms.

It’s important for everyone to be aware of these signs and symptoms, particularly if you live with or care for a person who is in a high-risk group, such as someone who is elderly, has diabetes or high blood pressure.
